Description Bastien Nocera 2011-02-23 00:10:59 UTC
It's currently impossible for normal users to add new providers (bug 643023), and there is also no UI for it.

A potential UI could be integration with Firefox/Epiphany to mirror their list of providers (Owen notes that Firefox ships 6 providers by default, and that it would be too big for our current UI).

I do agree that having something to manage the search providers would be usefull.

For the moment the user can't choose what is aggregated by default when searching. this could be customized by the end user, that maybe don't want to show what are the recent files used...

I like the way search providers are selected on firefox. so why not having a combobox with the list of the providers?
And the default one would be the search aggregator, that uses many search providers (applications, parameters, places, devices, recently used files, zeitgeist, etc), but only aggregate a few ones.

this way the user could easily switch to a specific provider, as a combobox is very easy to navigate. just a though.

OpenSearch providers have been removed in 3.6.
