GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 642986
Add a link to applications/package installer in the Applications pane
Last modified: 2014-08-07 10:28:09 UTC
Applications/package installer are currently handled as "normal" application by the shell. It might be handy to have a persistent plus sign or a textual link to the distribution installation program (packagekit-gnome, synaptic, whatever-suse-uses...) displayed on the Application pane of the overview. It would make g-s behave like a full application management tool, from installation to launch and tighten the "materiality" of applications (well actually their representing icons). In the same vein, a context menu action for removal might be added.
Now that we are getting gnome-software, this seems like something we should consider?
(In reply to comment #1) > Now that we are getting gnome-software, this seems like something we should > consider? It's certainly something we'd discussed, and it would make sense to have a link from the applications view. I'm not sure where we'd put the button though.
I've just discussed this with Jakub, who had a mockup for this in the past - https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-design/plain/mockups/static/overview-app-picker-all.png Our concern is that adding another element to the applications view makes things feel a bit crowded and busy. Also, since we already have a launcher for Software, this button would be duplicating existing functionality. A good compromise would be to ensure that Software is added to the dash by default. I've filed bug 734406 for this.
