GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 634940
User complaint about religious symbol in security-high.png
Last modified: 2010-12-15 16:24:55 UTC
Created attachment 174543 [details] security-high icon, 48x48px In Fedora we recently received a complaint about the security-high.png icon, which depicts a Christian cross towards the center top of the design. The user requested that the religious symbol be removed since he appears to be offended somewhat by it. The Fedora bug is here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=650505 Do you think the symbol should be removed? I'm happy to do the work to modify the icon if that would be helpful.
A design similar to what KDE uses might be more appropriate than simply removing the cross -- http://websvn.kde.org/*checkout*/trunk/kdesupport/oxygen-icons/48x48/status/security-high.png
I think the Oxygen icon looks a bit too similar to the Windows 7 security icon: http://blogs.technet.com/blogfiles/seanearp/WindowsLiveWriter/LayersDefenseinDepthPart1_B11E/Security%20shield%20windows.png Maybe if we kept the same shape of the basic form, which is pretty different, and filled in the shield with green + a checkmark?
Well it is a fairly generic shield design. I'm not opposed to any design. The current silhouette didn't seem obvious until I put the swords and cross on it, and I feel like the execution isn't on par with the rest. But if you want to give it a whirl, please do! If nothing else it can be an intermediate state addressing the issue at hand and we can revisit the whole shield design later.
Fixed in master.
