Glib gettext macros are old and unmaintained. Also, we can use upstream gettext now without problems.

Why would I do that? What do I gain? Are the glib macros going to get removed?

Yes, the plan is to deprecate the current Glib macros, as they are old and unmaintained and we can use upstream gettext without problems nowadays.
