I am not sure of the component, please change it if necessary.

Original bug in Launchpad : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-media/+bug/625731

Users expects to find all sounds settings in the "Sound Preferences".

Problem : the "ding" sound played when the gdm login screen is ready is not even mentioned in it, leading to user's confusion as:
- choosing "No sound" does not disable the "ding" (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/597540)
- mute the sound does not disable the "ding".

Currently we can configure this sound in the "Login screen", which is logical so no need to change it. Let's just add another way to configure it inside the "Sound Preferences".

Technically, this could be either :
- integrated in the "Sound Preferences" (this particular sound would require administrator password to enable/disable it)
- OR this could also be a button opening the "Login screen" window (I guess this would be very simple to implement).

Agreed there.

This might be something to add to the user accounts panel, in the login manager preferences.
Comment 2 Jakub Steiner 2011-07-22 12:22:07 UTC
With my option-hating hat on, my initial thought was to simply apply the ding sound volume/mute setting for gdm if there is only one real user of a system. I bet that covers a majority of use cases.

But we likely don't want to rule out multi-user boxes just yet. I would think sticking to the sound panel might, however, might be better than introducing this into the login panel. It has to do with sound more than it does to user accounts/login. I would add a "[ ] applies to login screen" checkbox to the 'sound effects' tab that would be disabled/insensitive by default. We would need the unlock button to authorize as an admin to be able to change this setting.

Mass reassign, sorry for the noise.
Comment 4 chris 2013-03-05 01:15:06 UTC
is here any work in progress?

No, we're waiting on designer feedback on how to implement this.
Comment 6 Allan Day 2013-04-20 17:33:13 UTC
Do we even make a sound once the system has booted?

No, but there's the usual alert sounds.
Comment 8 André Klapper 2021-06-09 16:07:03 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new bug report at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
