"In gnome clock applet when I add Astana, Kazakstan as a location, it automatically selects "Western Kazakhstan (GMT +5)" timezone. The correct value should be "Eastern Kazakhstan (GMT +6)", same as for Almaty."

Pedro thanks. If testing is needed, please let me know.

Hm... if I'm remembering right, we couldn't find a good (English-language) source of timezone information for Kazakhstan, so I just guessed based on longitude. Can you confirm the other cities for us?

Right now, for Western Kazakhstan we have: Aqtau, Aqtobe, Astana, Oral, Qostanay, and Shymkent. And for Eastern Kazakhstan we have: Almaty, Qaraghandy, and Qyzylorda. Are any of those wrong besides Astana?

(Also, are "Eastern Kazakhstan" and "Western Kazakhstan" good names for the timezones? Or do people call them something else? Eg, "Almaty Time", etc)

Hi Dan,
The closest I could find is here http://www.statoids.com/tkz.html
Also, I think GNOME itself has it right.

Anyhow, in Western Timezone we have Aqtau, Aqtobe, Atyrau and Oral.
In Eastern Timezone (also referred to as "Astana time") we have Almaty, Astana, Karagandy, Kokshetau, Kostanay, Kyzylorda, Oskemen, Shymkent, Taraz and Pavlodar.

Now, you'll probably won't have enough space to list all the cities in Eastern Timezone. I would recommend then to list Astana, Almaty and Shymkent.
Or, take the GNOME approach which calls it "Most Locations"

Thanks a lot for looking into this!
Erlan

See bug 776493

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Kazakhstan contains information about the provinces and their timezones.
