Description Hendrik Richter 2010-08-03 11:03:55 UTC
The left, primary notebook monitor has a resolution of 1024x768, while the secondary monitor on its right has the larger resolution of 1600x1200.

The panel is displayed on the primary monitor, but I cannot see it. It seems it is displayed at (1024-1600, 768-1200) = (-576, -432)

I'm running Fedora 13 with GNOME 2.30.2 and have compiled gnome-shell and its stack via the script linked on l.g.o just a few minutes ago.

have to confirm this as a series of bugs. i prefer to handle this as one bug, because they are intimately related.

my Monitor Setting:
on the primary monitor (notebook) i have a lower resolution. also, the secondary monitor is on the top of the primary monitor.

Bug 1:
the gnome shell toolbar appears on the secondary monitor (because its the upper monitor) with the measurements for the primary monitor, that means its a little bit on the left and - because of the lower resolution - to small.

how it should be:
in my opinion, gnome-shell should appear on every monitor separately with the correct measurements.

Bug 2:
if i open the gnome-shell into activity view, it appears on the primary monitor. this is inconsistent behavior.

how it should be:
activity view has to be on the same monitor than the gnome-shell bar.

Bug 3:
if the gnome-shell is opened in activity view, all applications from all monitors are shown on the primary monitor. this behavior results in multiple bugs:

Bug 3.1:
black bars, because of scaling for the different background sizes.

Bug 3.2:
to many application window previews on a single monitor, loosing overview

Bug 3.3:
the windows from the upper monitor are moved a bit to much on the top, so the closing button from the preview is not reachable for the applications on the top monitor. this is specially the case if the window is moved so much to the top, that the chrome is not reachable for window-moving (logical)or clicking the x-button.

Bug 3.4: security related!
during presenations, windows may appear on the beamer resulting in giving away informations that is not intended for the public.

how it should be:
the windows previews have to appear on the monitor on which the windows actually are. there has to be a separate preview for each monitor. this probably solves the scaling issues.

suggestion:
right-clicking of window-previews should give a context-menu with advanced options, including "close", "move", "move to other monitor", etc..

Initial bug is fixed by a patch on 642881 which will be applied shortly. Other comments are largely all covered by the 609258 master bug.
