Description Julien Olivier 2010-06-17 07:07:09 UTC
Whenever I play a movie in Totem, the number of the chapter is displayed by default as a subtitle ("Chapter 1" for example). I can disable subtitles, but they keep coming back each time I play a movie.

You mean that the subtitle names in the menu appear as "Chapter X" instead of the language name, or "Subtitle X"?

If so, do you have a test file that we could use to reproduce the problem?
Comment 2 Julien Olivier 2010-09-02 19:42:27 UTC
No Bastien, I mean that the text "chapter X" appears as a subtitle, unless I disable the subtitles.

I found an Ubuntu bug in which it may be better explained: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/552325
Comment 3 Bastien Nocera 2010-09-02 21:09:02 UTC
I'd still need a file to reproduce the problem.

It's fairly easy to create a file exhibiting the problem by using Handbrake. In most (if not all) cases we can't provide you with an example file as we don't own the copyright on the video. I'd be happy to provide the Handbrake profile that I'm using and work with someone to find a DVD that we both have to replicate the problem with.
Comment 6 Bastien Nocera 2011-01-31 15:58:07 UTC
I'm sorry, but we're not going to go through the trouble of ripping DVDs to fix this problem. Mail me privately when you've uploaded a test file somewhere.

3-second video displaying "chapter 1" as a subtitle.
Comment 8 Julien Olivier 2011-02-15 15:21:48 UTC
Bastien, I uploaded a very short video showing this problem. If you open it in totme, it will display "Chapter 1" as a subtitle. This video was created with the latest handbrake-gtk on Ubuntu 10.04, if that helps...
Comment 9 Bastien Nocera 2011-06-10 09:34:19 UTC
GStreamer does detect a subtitle track:

$ gst-discoverer-0.10 /home/hadess/Desktop/Downloads/test.m4v
Analyzing file:///home/hadess/Desktop/Downloads/test.m4v
Done discovering file:///home/hadess/Desktop/Downloads/test.m4v

Topology:
  container: Quicktime
    unknown: text/plain
    audio: MPEG-4 AAC
    video: H.264

      audio codec: MPEG-4 AAC audio

      language code: fr
      subtitle codec: Quicktime timed text

      encoder: HandBrake svn3797 2011021301
      container format: ISO MP4/M4A

Not sure if it's supposed to be an actual subtitle track, but I've seen this in a number of QuickTime encoded files, so it may need special handling.

How much more confirmation do we need?
Comment 11 Tim-Philipp Müller 2011-10-17 22:46:04 UTC
This looks like a duplicate of bug #628790 (or vice versa).

However, it's not clear to me that this is not the right behaviour, both for

  1) this = showing the subtitles by default

or

  2) this = "chapter X" being visible the entire time

1) would need to be fixed or worked around in totem, e.g. via an option. 2) would need a spec or indication showing that we're either mis-detecting this as subtitle stream, but it's really something else, or that we get the durations wrong.

Bug 628790 has more discussion about the problem.

Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.
