Description w1zard 2010-05-19 10:13:12 UTC
When a menu, such as the the main menu, is open, the Alt-Tab window switching shortcut fails to work. This seems counter-intuitive as it should be usable regardless of other window states. Originally reported in Ubuntu here:

I presume metacity can do nothing in this bug, the problem is the menu has a grab and so the alt+tab key stroke is send to it rather than metacity.

This is a bit more serious than just a system menu. It is also affected by autocomplete fields in web browsers and opened list boxes (combo boxes). For example, if I'm using firefox and I enter some text in the google search field, it will pop open a list of suggestions automatically. The alt-tab switch will not work as long as that list is on-screen. In order to get alt-tab to work, I have to hit escape so that it closes, then alt-tab will work.

This applies to any multimedia keyboard buttons, so if i want to turn the volume down with the media button while a menu is open it wont work just like any keyboard shortcuts.

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
