Seems to be a GTK bug for now; given we haven't encountered this before ever, and it's involved in some pretty core GTK+ functionality.  The applet doesn't manually freeze/thaw anything GTK-related.

still relevant with GTK+ 3.22 or master, please consider creating a gitlab issue
for it.
