So I created an openvpn connection profile, and it works if I select it from the nm-applet VPN menu, but it does not connect automatically, even if I set the "Connect Automatically" checkbox in the profile.

Same here with vpnc, so I suppose it isn't specific to the VPN backend software.
Debian Squeeze i386, NetworkManager 0.8.
