Description M. Vefa Bicakci 2010-04-10 17:59:50 UTC
Hello,

I am using an up-to-date Debian Sid installation. When I start
empathy-accounts, or when I select "Edit -> Accounts" from Empathy,
nothing happens; that is, no account settings window appears.

sjoerd in #empathy suggested that I create a bug report with the
the strace of empathy-accounts when it's trying to start and the
d-bus activity that occurs during empathy-accounts startup
(the output of "dbus-monitor --session"). I will attach these
output files in a minute.

Thank you.

Could you start it with EMPATHY_DEBUG=all and attach logs please?

Output of empathy-accounts with env. var. EMPATHY_DEBUG=all

Hello,

Attached is the output of empathy-accounts with EMPATHY_DEBUG=all.
Unfortunately, setting EMPATHY_DEBUG to all does not give a lot
information.

I made sure that there were no mission-control-5 or empathy-accounts
instances running before I started empathy-accounts with the mentioned
environment variable.
Comment 5 M. Vefa Bicakci 2010-04-12 12:58:50 UTC
Just a note: After I get the attached output, empathy-accounts simply
hangs, it doesn't produce more output or show a window.
Comment 6 Guillaume Desmottes 2010-04-12 13:06:53 UTC
Humm that's really weird. According to dbus log MC seems to work fine. Could you please start it using MC_DEBUG=5 /usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5 and then start empathy-accounts.
Be sure there is not running instead of mission-control-5 before.

Unfortunately the output of empathy-accounts stays the same.

Here's the output of mission control with MC_DEBUG=5
Comment 9 M. Vefa Bicakci 2010-04-12 13:20:15 UTC
Again, unfortunately the programs do not produce any more output, and
no windows show up.
Comment 10 Guillaume Desmottes 2010-04-13 07:41:10 UTC
Wtf, this is really weird. Does "mc-tool list" returns something when MC is running?
Comment 11 M. Vefa Bicakci 2010-04-13 14:18:04 UTC
Hello,

I am really sorry. I just realized that this isn't a bug
in Empathy. It is user and distribution error combined.

After looking at the options mc-tool has and its man-page,
I noticed that it refers to "gabble". Then I realized that
I didn't have Debian's telepathy-gabble or telepathy-haze
packages installed. I just installed the telepathy-gabble
package and now everything works.

I think it is a bit strange that Debian uses "Recommends"
and not "Depends" for these libraries.

Again, I am really sorry for taking your time. I am closing
the bug with INVALID.
Comment 12 M. Vefa Bicakci 2010-04-13 14:20:04 UTC
Well, when I look back, maybe there could be a suggestion
regarding Empathy.

Maybe Empathy could inform the user when there are no
libraries that can be used to connect to networks, so
that the user would know he/she is missing a library
package?
Comment 13 Guillaume Desmottes 2010-04-13 15:13:01 UTC
Yeah we should definitely display at least something. Could you please open another bug for that?
Comment 14 M. Vefa Bicakci 2010-04-15 21:11:51 UTC
Dear Guillaume Desmottes,

I am sorry about the delay. I have been busy for a few days.
I just filed a bug report about Empathy's lack of warnings
when no connection manager libraries are installed.

Here's the link:

Thanks for the help.
