Description Dejan Čabrilo 2010-04-09 18:52:47 UTC
This is valid for both desktop and sidebar panel (places).

When I insert a USB stick into the machine, I get an icon on the desktop. Neat. Right clicking on it, I get three options to unmount it:

"Unmount", "Eject" and "Safely remove drive"

To the best of my understanding, all three options do exactly the same.

It's both confusing (Google for "unmount" "eject" "Safely remove drive" and you'll see a lot of people asking for what the difference is) and cluttering to have three items doing the same thing.

I can see the difference and need for "Unmount" and "Eject" for a CD, though I still don't suppose that an average user would want to unmount a CD without ejecting it.

Is there any chance to consolidate these three items into a single one?

Thanks

Confirmed on Lucid beta2 by several French users, sometimes not 3 but 2 options (Eject, and Safely Remove Drive). Only 1 option is sufficient for a normal user.
Advanced users who need to play with partitions can use a specific tool/applet...

Furthermore, I can't believe that in 2010 we still need to click somewhere before unplugging an USB key !
The system should just warn if the user unplugged the device too soon saying "You unplugged the device but there are still operations remaining. Please re-plug the device, or operations will be cancelled."
