The Default Applications icon looks like the classic installer icon. The imagery of the floppy and the CD communicates installation more than "selection of applications to fufill particular tasks". The name is also not clear. We are having trouble suggesting a better name / icon, but the current ones really don't work. We would love to work with an artist towards designing a better name & icon for this.
Jakub, are you going to have any time to look at this? Will tig?
Just doing some tagging of files I've already triaged. Filter on 'luis doing GNOME2 work' to get rid of the spam.
I'm unable for figure out something better. I asked Seth Nickel, Suzanna Smith for help but they didn't help either. Suggestions?

Its a bit cluttered, but the best icon I can think of for now would be to show a few very "application-y" looking mini-images. For example: "a notepad, an envelope, and a globe". Its better if they don't look connected and cohesive (for example, different elements might be coloured somewhat differently rather than trying to mesh them tightly as you would usually do), to emphasize the idea that its a montage of applications behind the icon. Most linux applications don't come in a box... I think that may be part of the problem with the current imagery used to depict "applications". Boxes still make me think "installation", though not so much as the CD did. I've recommended to jrb who's working on the capplet that it also be rennamed "Preferred Applications", which a small scale usability test showed to be more intelligable than "Default Applications" (though still not really up to par). I don't think this is critically important for GNOME 2, but it still might be nice to have if you have time.
Oh, if you stick with the "fixup of the old one", can I suggest that each box be a different colour? Those remind me of RedHat boxes awfully much, and changing the colour and look of two of them might do away with that problem as well as emphasize that there are multiple application preferences behind the icon.
Updating all cc bugs that have the GNOME2 keyword set to the GNOME2.0 milestone, to help jrb triage/prioritize cc bugs. Filter on 'luis doing GNOME2 work' to ignore this spam.
SPAM as discussed last night. Search for 'SPAM as discussed last night' to catch these all and delete them. :)

I like the idea of using the favorites icon.... Maybe not with the executable icon though (since ideally people would never really see that... since it only really shows up if you're looking at the files in */bin). Its good food for thought, maybe in combination with something else.
Reassigning preferred applications bugs into the component that, for some reason, didn't exist until now. Filter for "Andrew doing reassignment work" to get rid of this e-mail spam.
