GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 614657
New windows open in "wrong" workspace
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:36:49 UTC
Hello (this is my first gnome bug report so please forgive me if I filed it incorrectly) Lets say I have 2 workspaces (desktops) and I am currently in the first. I startup an application (any application) and switch to the second workspace before the application starts. When the application starts, the window of that application appears in the second workspace. In addition, if I open a window of the running application and switch to the first workspace, that window will appear in the first workspace. So now I will have two windows of the same application on different workspaces. It would be great if new windows would appear only in the workspace in which they were opened and not always in the current workspace. I think that this is actually a bug and not an enhancement, but I understand that it is not easily solved so I file it as an enhancement. Thanks, Anestis
Which window manager are you using: compiz or metacity? (this should be reported against the WM)
(In reply to comment #1) > Which window manager are you using: compiz or metacity? (this should be > reported against the WM) I am using ubuntu 9.10 so I suppose the default window manager is metacity. The output of "sudo update-alternatives --config x-window-manager" is: "There is only one alternative in link group x-window-manager: /usr/bin/metacity Nothing to configure." Now that you asked, I have enabled Extra visual effects (which i believe use compiz) and the behavior is the same. So what are you suggesting, should I file a new bug report to the "metacity" project?

bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use metacity and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
