This is with gnome-terminal 2.30.0. I'm not using the Composite extension but pseudotransparency. The desktop background is not darkened anymore although the slider is set to max.

Nothing changes in g-t wrt backgrounds, so this is most likely a vte issue.
Can you try to revert vte commit 5f4f67f579c9530af716573d6aaafc9cdb060e09 and see if that fixes it?

Indeed, reverting that changeset makes the transparent background work again. Can anybody add Kristian Høgsberg here please?
