Description Bruce Cowan 2010-03-08 20:35:55 UTC
Currently, Ubuntu has changed some strings in their packages from whatever upstream use (wastebasket in GNOME) to "Deleted Items folder". While it's generally agreed this is a long-winded name, it'd be nice to have cross-desktop unity on what to call the "bin".

There's a discussion on https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/406626 about a possible new name.

I propose that GNOME adopt a new name, along with other DEs. Obviously this means that contacting KDE en_GBers will need carried out; as well as Xfce and so on.

This should be discussed on the mailing-list. And I think it's a pretty crappy name...
Comment 2 Philip Withnall 2010-03-09 10:23:43 UTC
I'd be OK with "Rubbish Bin", but there's the slight potential for confusion about "bin" (i.e. between a container and a binary). Since KDE and GNOME both use variations on "waste" at the moment, why not just harmonise on "wastebasket" or "wastebin"?

Yes, I filed this as I didn't feel comfortable using the main l10n list for an en_GB thing.

The gnome-uk list is the place to discuss this, not the i18n list.
Comment 5 Bruce Cowan 2010-08-26 13:05:36 UTC
The Ubuntu team have decided suddenly that the term is now "rubbish bin"[0], I suggested to the list that we also use the same term for the sake of consistency.

I'm setting as INCOMPLETE given that this needs to be discussed. Please reopen if there is substantial progress.
