GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 61176
row numbers not shown with updated fonts
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
When the 75 and 100dpi fixed fonts for version 4.1.0-6 of xfree86 are installed (by command "dpkg -i xfonts-75dpi_4.1.0-6_all.deb") then when gnumeric is run the row numbers are not shown but dotted boxes are shown in their places. Also the text on the Help/About screen is shown as boxes only. When the earlier font version are reinstalled (by command "dpkg -i xfonts-75dpi_4.0.3-4.deb") then when gnumeric is run the row numbers are correctly shown and so is the help text. (The updated 100dpi fonts only affect the title on the help screen, but cause it to be replaced by boxes.) This may be a bug in the x11 fonts, but I suspect the cause is that in gnumeric the fonts are selected by absolute names rather than aliases and the name for the particular one used for these row numbers has been changed in some way in the x11 font distribution. I almost forgot an important item: I am not running the Gnome desktop or window manager, but am running fvwm95.
This was discussed in this weeks Debian News. gnumeric was not being selective enough in its specification of encoding. I believe new font packages have been released that handle the problem. Until we port to gnome-2 (and utf8) encodings will continue to be a problem.
