What about to use the Damned-Lies web interface for uploading the po files, instead of Bugzilla? Damned-Lies takes a proofrun with every file, it runs "msgfmt -cv filename.po" to prevent from errors (such as the mentioned mnemonics or non-matching variables like %s or %d). This would be the most painless way to keep it error-free.
