Directly opened files should NOT end up in downloads folder

When I follow a hyperlink to a PDF file Epiphany asks me whether I want to open or save the document (the automatic opening checkbox is disabled). So far so good. However, if I choose to open (not save) the document, it is still saved into my Downloads folder. The net result is that my download folder ends up as a terrible mess of PDF files and other files that cannot be shown directly in Epiphany. This is a major usability regression compared to Ephy 2.26.x. The old behaviour (pre-Webkit) was to put these temporary files in /tmp (or whatever GLib thinks my tmpdir is). Please bring back that behaviour. Thanks! :)

This is not a bug but a feature, as far as I'm concerned. Epiphany/Gecko used to do it this way, just in recent versions it didn't because of a Gecko issue.
I still maintain that this is highly annoying and unwanted behaviour. As I stated before, temporary downloads should be put into a temporary folder. If I want to download the files instead, I would've chosen "save as" in the first place...
I complete agree with Wouter, this is just filling my download directory with unwanted files.
A question of taste, I suppose. I find it highly convenient that, for example, every pdf I've ever downloaded is still in my downloads folder so that I don't have to save a copy from evince if I want to keep it.

The current behaviour is to put every download in your downloads folder, regardless of what action you take on them. We don't ask to Open/Save anymore. The motivation behind that is to avoid interruptions and fit into the "no distractions" goals of GNOME3. However, the UX is not perfect so it's up to discussion if we can improve it. Can you think of some way to discriminate downloads without asking?
It is neccesary, if you will make an decision on this topic. Therefore: Needinfo If there is no answer, the bug will be closed in 6 weeks.
@Diego, you're our downloads man. Given that we have a download bar now, what do you think of Wouter and Allan's proposals?
We could tweak the behavior so it never acts on the downloaded file. Both open file and open folder are available in the download-widget menu. And if you click the main button you get the default for that mime type. For the cluttering issue, I appreciate what we do now. But I understand that it might cause some pain. What would be the updated problem statement now that we don't ask Open/Save?
