GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 605566
Comment Columns
Last modified: 2018-09-21 16:05:19 UTC
I think it would be great to have a "comment" column where I can make quick notes for each line about difficult translations or lines that I have to re-translate. Maybe even a "Done" checkbox column would do the trick?! This would be especially helpful if an automated translation component were added so as that lines which were auto-translated can be "checked" for accuracy.
Eamon, do you have a suggestion about where the comments would be stored? A new subtitle project file, for instance?
That is a tough one! I suppose the best thing to do would be to encode it as metadata in the subtitle!? however, not all subtitle formats support metadata so I think that won't work. Also, depending on the use of a translation column it would sometimes be more appropriate to include it with the translation file instead of the original subtitle. So again, not a good solution! I can't really see another way of doing it than to have a separate comments file other than a local DB. The local DB is probably more trouble than it is worth and eliminates the potential for any portability of the comments. I think that the comments file may be the best solution though, since after looking for a comments option in the menus, I had the idea of simply adding a second translation column so that I could use that... but could not. That is when I had my ideas about a 'comments' column.
I agree, having this sort of data on the subtitles doesn't seem like the best approach. It would be best to use a "universal" subtitle _project_ file, but I think there isn't such a thing, so the best is perhaps to use the project files from existing applications, if they're able to accommodate this, or create a new format if needed.
