Don't really know what it does or what other process starts it, but kernel traces on every machine I have (running Gnome 2.28 on Gentoo) show gvfsd-metadata segfaulting (probably at the time I log into a Gnome session).

[ 156.290543] gvfsd-metadata[3779]: segfault at 8 ip 0804d1b5 sp bfd00350 error 4 in gvfsd-metadata[8048000+b000]

If, from my Gnome session, I start the binary manually, it seems to run just fine.

If you need more info, just tell me what to do.

I am pretty sure that this is a dup of bug 598561. If it is still crashing for you can you confirm it by removing ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata?

It was still crashing, but not anymore, after removing the directory that you mentioned. I trust you that this indeed is a dup, thanks.
