GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 602853
memory leak on toggling "Activities"
Last modified: 2009-11-24 22:32:48 UTC
Hello, I am using 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10, with Ricoz PPA for Gnome Shell. I just updated packages, the version installed now is 2.28.1~14-g988d-0~ricotz1 There seems to be quite a heavy memory leak when activating and deactivating the Activities - that is, moving the mouse cursor repeatedly to upper left corner of the screen. I noticed that my computer was actually swapping heavily after long desktop session. I checked RAM usage, and mutter topped with more than 1.2GiB! I restarted the gnome-shell ("r") and it was normal again. I am using the following programs right now: Opera, Skype, Pidgin, Gnome-terminal, Gnome System Monitor, Thunderbird; total 6 windows on 2 desktops. Memory usage of mutter after every 10 visits to "Activities" in MB's: 23.5 44.6 60.2 72.1
Known that more work is needed on memory leaks, don't need an individual bug for this. (Generally something like this should be assigned to gnome-shell rather than Mutter; while the leak could be in the Mutter code, there's lots of stuff in the higher level gnome-shell that could leak.) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 595321 ***
