Description Pacho Ramos 2009-11-01 18:30:48 UTC
I really dislike current homepage behavior of opening that webpage on every tab is opened but, as I know that epiphany maintainers will probably don't change that 'strange' policy, I would suggest them that, at least, URL bar should get the focus and be cleared just after opening new tab, even if a homepage is set.

Current behavior:
1. I press "Ctrl+T" or click in button to open a new tab
2. Homepage is loaded
3. I need to double-click on URL bar to clean homepage and write the page I want to visit

Suggested behavior:
1. I press "Ctrl+T" or click in button to open a new tab
2. Homepage is loaded but, even with it, URL bar is already clean and with the focus, then, I can start typing new URL just after pressing Ctrl+T

Suggested behavior looks much faster to me than current one

Thanks a lot

Have you tried:
1. Press Ctrl+L to focus URL bar and select URL
2. Type URL of page you want to visit (current entry is immediately overwritten)
3. Press Ctrl+Enter or middle click Go button

What you're asking for, is simply a duplicate of bug 105153.

It works ok, thanks for the tip!

But, why not do it always as default when simply pressing Ctrl+T? Maybe, after some secs not typing anything, focus could be lost and homepage shown in URL bar if you want :-/

As explained in the discussion on bug 105153: "If a a page is loaded in the new tab, then the priority is given to the page (so that, in the case of a search field, you can start typing right away)."

But it wouldn't be needed since I can also use URL bar to search something in the web
Comment 5 Reinout van Schouwen 2009-11-02 13:30:31 UTC
It is the generic case: a just loaded webpage (such as a homepage in a new tab) should have focus so you can type in form fields or press pagedown, etc.

Well, ok, this comes from our differences on interpretation about how homepage should behave. I am from the people who dislikes about being unable to have a homepage only shown in first tab, for example, a newspaper that I want to visit often, but not as often to have it shown each time a tab is opened (as, in my case, I open new tabs much more frequently than new epiphany windows), because it can be slow (as they contain a lot of images, flash contents...) and it's also tedious to have to get the focus in URL bar (well, now it is less tedious than before, as you tell me to use another shutcut to get the focus, but it still requires more time than the required when using browsers with the other behavior)

So, set a blank homepage then and make an Epiphany launcher on your panel or desktop with the URL of your newspaper as parameter. Or put a bookmark on the toolbar...

Silly me! Good catch, I didn't think about simply creating a launcher or bookmark on the toolbar :-O

Thanks a lot for your attention and sorry for the inconvenience
Comment 9 Pacho Ramos 2009-11-02 14:47:55 UTC
Have you think about adding "bookmark in toolbar" suggestion in:
http://projects.gnome.org/epiphany/

under "Customizable user interface" section as a "replacement" for "classical" homepage behavior?
Comment 10 Reinout van Schouwen 2009-11-02 15:58:21 UTC
The homepage is quite outdated-- please feel free to provide an updated text (module gnomeweb-wml).
Comment 11 Pacho Ramos 2009-11-02 16:18:50 UTC
Is this the proper one?
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gnomeweb-wml/tree/projects.gnome.org/epiphany/index.html

I will take a look to it, once I generate a diff, how do you prefer to get it? Should I open a new bug report attaching the diff?

Thanks

It looks like it, yes.

Yes please. While you're at it, could you also take a look at other open bugs against the Website component? :)
Comment 13 Pacho Ramos 2009-11-02 17:55:08 UTC
Yes, for sure, but maybe I will take some days as don't have many time, but I will take a look to them also
