Description Michael Monreal 2009-10-08 09:19:17 UTC
One thing I find extremely bad about the shell right now is missing hover/mouseover feedback just about everywhere:

- Panel (Activities, Clock, User maneu)
- Overview:
 - Find, Clear Search
 - Application/Places/Recent launchers
 - More/Back buttons

In case of the panel, one may argue that current menubars also miss this feedback, but I have heard and seen people not finding the user menu for example (when exploring the shell for the first time, no hover feedback is very very bad)

In case of the Overview, it just feels very "flat" and less dynamic than it is. Some examples:

- move the mouse over the find entry: nothing happens. press some characters: the search actually works. It would be nicer to hide the "Find..." and just show a blinking cursor once the search entry is active.

- Places/Recent lists look nice but there is no indication at all that the user can interact with them in any way.

Yeah, need for hover feedback is crying out for itself.

I currently often miss the workspace closing button due to that. :) (I use a touchpad and also try to do things fast)

I think, that it's planned but not implemented yet ?

Hi Bulat. It is great that you are excited by the shell. I am too. I noticed that you have commented on a lot of bugs today with basically "me too". Just wanted to point out that doing so is generally considered to be bad form. Better if you can add value to the bug report. In most of these cases the problem is well known and doesn't need any more information such as how to reproduce it - it just needs to get time from someone who is capable enough to fix it. Thanks.

It is must have feature. User must be informed that buttons or icons are clickable. Also there must be some response when I clicked on some icon.

I'd like to suggest following approach:
1) Applications and other big icons
- there should be similar efect as it is in Moblin toolbar. Icon bounce and arrow tooltip with name of application.
- tooltips for applications are important because it can be way how to show full name of application
2) Places and Recent documents
- there is no hover effect at all, it is just a information or it is clickable? users are not conviced.
- because there are small icons it should be implemented with some sort of zoom effect
3) Gnome-shell panel. It is also completely static. There is no response on hover. There can be some nice effects using clutter.
Also, another issue is that I'm tried to click on selected window beside Activities button and I got no response. It has very bad impression because all other elements are clickable somehow.
- the best solution shoud be improve gnome-shell panel as regular gnome-panel. It means that there will be moveable applets with some sort of effect.
4) Find inputbox. It is the biggest problem now. User is not informed that inputbox have focus when I move mouse to left corner for overview. The overview is shown but I don't know that I'm able to type text for search without neccessity to click on inputbox.
- my proposal is add blinking white cursor into inputbox at least

Also everything should be configurable (effects, blinking cursor, behaviour, ...), but it is probably for anoter defect.

Marking as a duplicate of bug 609576, which is about hover feedback for panel buttons - hover feedback is pretty complete elsewhere.
