Windows XP Professional SP3 - screenshot

The HELP-buttons (nor F1) succeed in providing any help. I get help through IE7
on : http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/index.html

Loading an image by giving GIMP the URI gets the same error-message:
CANNOT-CONNECT. I can get the image via IE7.

This may possibly not be a straightforward GIMP-bug. Somebody here thinks GIMP
is trying to connect through a TPC/IP-port that our firewall does not tolerate.
He asks that someone let us know which port that is so it can be made available
and acceptable to our "firewall".

Attached a screenshot showing the error message.

Does IE7 go through a proxy?
Comment 2 Martin Nordholts 2009-08-26 18:32:21 UTC
Also, what are your Help System preferences? Have you tried setting IE7 as the browser?

C++ runtime error
Comment 6 Michael Schumacher 2009-08-27 13:21:57 UTC
How is the last one related to the original problem?
Comment 7 Andre Anckaert 2009-08-27 13:31:17 UTC
Being quite novice on Bugzilla I thought that my comment when placing 141847 would be visible. Sorry it was not! It just said: "I am still looking for clues".

I thought this might somewhere be related to the facts reported on August 26th.
Comment 8 Andre Anckaert 2009-08-27 16:03:26 UTC
Yet another screenshot: HELP-buttonclicked.jpeg. To show that GIMP is trying to load the Index from "http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-help.xml".

After quite a while of retrying GIMP return with the CANNOT_CONNECT error message shown in attachment 141775 [details].

I had IE7 download the "gimp-help.xml"-file:
###########
  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <gimp-help>
  <help-item id="gimp-main" ref="index.html" title="GNU Image Manipulation Program" parent="" /> ....
###########
and I copied it to a lot of GIMP-directories...

Some contents from my personal "gimprc"-file:
###########
(help-locales "en")
(help-browser web-browser)
(web-browser "C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe")
(user-manual-online yes)
##############

Hoping to have been of service.

After incurring an error I found my last remark nucely added to the bug. But there was no attachment. Here it is.
Comment 10 Sven Neumann 2009-08-27 19:29:29 UTC
That would be a problem in GIO then, in particular with the Win32 http code. But we would need some more information about your setup before we reassign the bug to the GLib developers. What exactly does your firewall block? Do you have a system-wide proxy setting for HTTP connections?
Comment 11 Michael Schumacher 2009-10-13 09:53:34 UTC
This could even be a problem on all platforms, see bug #580341.
Comment 12 Michael Schumacher 2010-01-18 11:48:09 UTC
Let's assume that it is.

Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.

From André Anckaert:

I just received a mail about this bug: because I was added tot the CC-list.

Some time ago I sent an email to announce that my roubles with GIMP-help were gone. Since downloading the new Help-system GIMP honours its help-buttons.

As far I am concerned this is no longer a bug. If it ever was one. Thanks to those who (re)solved it.(In reply to comment #12)
