Description Axel 2009-08-22 14:26:18 UTC
i want to use RB to playback webradio (shoutcast streams). as usual we search shoutcast streams either on shoutcast.com OR on some 3rd party website. they provice a listen.pls playlist in a URL like http://radio.108.pl:8004/listen.pls that is supposed to be recognized and played (automaticly) by some streamplayer.

RB can play those. but the Problem is, RB WILL NOT AUTOPLAY those streams if fired up through a webbrowser like firefox (3.0.x) on linux. BUT IT WILL AUTOPLAY if started through a CLI (console input) like: rhythmbox http://radio.108.pl:8004/listen.pls

While in firefox, clicking on such link brings up a FF dialog asking for an application to start with such links. i choose rhythmbox from /usr/bin and hit ok. i was not able to see a way to enter arguments or additional parameters here. however.. the RB comes up, but does not autoplay it. to play that stream youll have to click on RADIO first, and then search the list for your new recently added radio station. double click that and it plays the stream.

as mentioned before, RB WILL autoplay just like expected if done through console. So i guess there must be some difference when fireing up via firefox.

It should autoplay such links/streams like ANY of such players in MS Windows.

Im watching this problem now for a pretty long time (2+ years) and still is not being fixed. so i decided to file a bug report on this now.

meanwhile i found a workaround by a little wrapper script i wrote. if you start this script instead of rhythmbox from within firefox it will start RB the way it will start AND AUTOPLAY the desired stream as expected.

however this is a workaround and should realy get implemented into RB itself.

see my wrapper script at: http://awerner.homeip.net/doku.php?id=it-artikel:gnome-rhythmbox-autoplay-wrapper-script-for-internet-radio-shoutcast-streams
