1. Install Mandriva Cooker and run it 
2. Install mutter
3. Switch from metacity to mutter

Adding some information from the downstream bug. It is with gnome 2.27, mutter 2.27.0, clutter 1.0.0 and clutter-gtk 0.10.2 on Mandriva Cooker. Mutter does not display anything but a background and prevents Gnome to start for the user. In .xsession-errors, this is included:

Already fixed, I'll do another tarball release shortly. (2.27.0 is even older than the last one, but this problem was in 2.27.1 as well - it only affects mutter by itself and not mutter as used with gnome-shell or Moblin.)
