Description mgerdjev 2009-07-13 01:11:08 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Every time a song is changed by pressing prev/next or double clicking on a song
the volume of rhythmbox and the system is decreased. After about 3-4 changes
like that the volume is muted and has to be fixed from within rhythmbox or next
time it's muted again.
Also the volume slider in rhythmbox doesn't correspond to the system's volume
i.e. 16% in rhythmbox is 83% in the pulseaudio volume meter.

Steps to reproduce:
1.Play a song
2.Press next song button
3.Watch the volume decrease

Actual results:
Volume decreases

Expected results:
Volume should stay the same

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
I have filed a gentoo bug report and this is the url to it: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=277070
Also this didn't occur in rhythmbox-0.12.2

I can't reproduce this, and I can't see how it would be a bug in rhythmbox - we don't do anything that would change the volume on track changes. What versions of gst-plugins-base and pulseaudio are you using? Do you have crossfading enabled in rhythmbox?
Comment 2 mgerdjev 2009-07-13 13:25:54 UTC
media-libs/gst-plugins-base-0.10.23
media-sound/pulseaudio-0.9.15-r50

Crossfading is not enabled.
As I said before this didn't occur in rhythmbox 0.12.2. What I noticed is happening differently is the following. When I adjust the volume of pulseaudio, the volume slider in rhythmbox didn't change in the previous version but it changes in 0.12.3
What happens with the volume is a little weird. Let's say if the pulseaudio volume is 80% and I have the rhythmbox volume at 60%. What I normally was seeing in the previous version is when I play a song, the pulseaudio volume was dropping to 75% and when the song stops playing it goes back up to 80%. So on each track change it was going up then back down. But now what I see is that when it goes down during the track change it also lowers the rhythmbox volume further down which in turn lowers the pulseaudio volume again.
My volume decreases even if I just do stop/play and after 3-4 times of doing that it goes mute.

I haven't changed anything else on my system so I don't see how this wouldn't be tied to rhythmbox as if i downgrade to 0.12.2 i don't have that problem.

There have been a few changes in gst-plugins-base since 0.10.23 that appear to be related. If upgrading to 0.10.24 (when available) doesn't fix this, I'll take another look at it, but again, rhythmbox doesn't do anything with the volume on track changes, so it's hard to see what might need to be fixed there.
Comment 4 mgerdjev 2009-08-19 06:59:44 UTC
Upgrading to gst-plugins-base 0.10.24 fixed the problem with the volume changing.
Comment 5 Alex L. Mauer 2009-08-31 19:43:24 UTC
This is still a problem for me in Rhythmbox 0.12.4 and gstreamer-plugins-base 0.10.24, on Ubuntu Karmic
Comment 6 Colin Guthrie 2009-10-18 13:07:53 UTC
This should be fixed by various commits by Lennart into the pulse gstreamer plugin (in plugins-good)

See bug #595231 for details. Please note if backporting the patch: commit 42ee5e22 should probably be left out. It's not related to the specific fix and it is causing issues for me. I'll speak to wtay directly about it.

I think this bug can be closed as a dupe of #595231 but I don't seem to have such super powers :)
