GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 587968
Resolution of exported bitmap formats is poor
Last modified: 2009-07-20 07:30:09 UTC
1) Provide higher resolution of files exported as .bmp, .png, .tiff, .jpg files. The current resolution does not provide usable output. 2) Provide gif format - this suits better for drawing than any of the above. Other information:
Created attachment 137965 [details] Context Diagram.jpeg Example output in jpg format. Try to zoom in to read any of the text --- they are unreadable. PDF output has good resolution, but none of the graphic formats.
users may possibly also welcome a choice of image size and/or resolution in the export dialog.
The export resolution depends on the diagram scale. There is only one filter (libart based PNG) which has an explicit option to set the size, see bug #335693 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 335693 ***
Is there a way to re-scale (e.g. shrink) an existing drawing easily, without having to re-draw it? It looks I have entered my drawings far too large, so that's I'm running now into the described issue. Would like to re-scale existing drawing, so that the optical result stays the same (font sizes, line thickness etc would need to adjust proportionally) - is this possible?
File/Page Setup/Scale - for export to a non paginating filter just the given scale is used. The righer the value the more pixels you'll get.
Created attachment 138101 [details] Context Diagram.dia how to scale the .dia ?
Actually, my question regarding correction of scale was related to the .dia file itself. I may have formulated my question in #4 inaccurately. See attached .dia file. By using the defaults for objects and text, I have accidentally created a huge drawing (scale is 35%), which according to your earlier answer causes the poor resolution when exporting to jpg and other formats. I would like to modify the dia file, so the drawing then fits in 100% scale to the A4 paper. (instead of 35%). Though, I don't know how to do this, besides of scrapping my work and re-draw the whole figure. I did already try to group all objects in the drawing, and then use the resize handles of the group; though resizing seems not to work for groups (or multiple objects).
Hmm, as an experiment, I did re-draw this diagram to fit by 100%. The result of exported .jpg or .png file is still the same - poor resolution. What am I doing wrong? Maybe I did misinterpret the statements in #335693 regarding scaling?
Created attachment 138102 [details] Test Diagram.dia This diagram is now re-drawn to fit by 100% scale onto one paper (A or A4 size)
Created attachment 138103 [details] Context Diagram.jpeg This is the resulting output. Still poor resolution. Same results for all other bitmap-style formats. (.bmp, .png, .tiff) (.wmf and .pdf are fine)
Actually, is my ticket really a duplicate of #335693? This ticket asks how to influence the X/Y of the created export file. (yes, this would be indeed a good feature). My main problem though is the poor resolution, and I don't see this in #335693.
Did you actually *try* what I telled you in comment #5? And how do yout think the resolution of a bitmap resolution is increased? BTW: bugzilla is not a help forum, if you need a different explaination than given above you could try to ask on the mailing-list.
yes, I have been able now to find the resolution adjustment dialog when exporting to the "png (anti-aliased)" format. This helps me to proceed.
