- 'random' mode
- next track was playing while the crash popup showed up and after I ok'd it shut down banshee as well

Can you test with Banshee 1.5.0?  It is available for Ubuntu in the unstable ppa.

The last stacktrace in your log, related to NotificationAreaService.get_IsNotificationDaemon, seems to be the same issue as bug #587409
Are you running the XFCE notification daemon ?
If not, which one are you running ? Look for "notify" or "notification" in your installed packages.

There's hope.  You can turn off the Notifications extension to avoid the problem.  I'm going to close this as a duplicate of the other bug.
