GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 586861
chat window + contacts list entries for auto-joined IRC chat rooms
Last modified: 2018-05-22 13:33:51 UTC
With pidgin I had it set up so that it auto joined several different channels from several different irc servers. The channels would show up in a separate chat window but they would also show up in the friends list under the chat category. I found this useful because I could have an irc channel open without needing the separate chat window open at all times. This way the chat window would only open if I explicitly told it to open within pidgin's friend list or if someone on the channel pinged me. I think this would be an extremely useful feature for empathy and definitely something allot of people will miss when empathy is used as the default in ubuntu/fedora.
As the bug has not been reviewed yet (apparently), I would like to second this comment. It would make chat rooms a more continuous experience. For users having a long contact list, perhaps it would be nice to put IRC (or google talk or whatever) channels in a group on top of the contact list.
Thanks for the suggestion! Could you draw a sketch or take a screenshot of the desired behavior and arrangement and attach it to this bug? That always helps with UI discussion.
Created attachment 157757 [details] A buddy list with both chat and freinds sections
Created attachment 157758 [details] The add chat window whith auto-join and persistent channels
I am attaching two screenshots of what comment 0 was talking about. The first one is the buddy list in pidgin with channels as items in the list. The second one is of the add chat dialog in pidgin that allows a person to both auto join the channel when the application starts, and allows you to make your connection to this room persistent and logging event even when the window is closed.
Confirmed. I've been testing empathy for a few days and there's something bad about how it displays IRC channels. I think this bug should be splitted in 3 tickets: * Display favorite IRC channels in the contacts list (currently they're hidden in a menu) - see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=157757 * Add ability to auto-join favorite channels * Add ability to close the chat window without quitting the conversation https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=586861 is a good illustration of these 2 points. Can we rename this bug as the first point? I can take care of opening the 2 other bug reports.
