GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 584600
Improvement suggestions
Last modified: 2009-06-02 12:33:24 UTC
After switching to Empathy from Pidin I've noticed that some features that seem pretty default for every multi-procotoll IM client are still missing: Empathy doesn't support so called meta-contacts. That means, that I've got the same person twice in my contact list, because he/she also uses more than one IM service. Simple notification. Whenever I receive I message, it'd be really nice if Empathy could also notify me the default Gnome way (hint that's shown somewhere on the desktop, just as it is when the song changes in Rythmbox, etc.). And one last thing that came to my mind: That's a feature that Kopete has got and I think it is a good idea to implement something like that - a "global idendity". That means, that you just have to set you profile picture and display name, etc. once in the settings dialog and it is automatically applied to all configured IM accounts. I think that I'm not the only one that would consider that quite handy. ;) Apart from that Empathy already is able to do everything I want my IM to do, so keep up the good work. And I'd really, really appreciate it if any of my suggestions might be adopted in some future release! :)
Thanks for your input, developers prefer not to mix things in a single bug report. - meta-contacts are requested in bug #460647 - notifications: empathy will blink its status icon and will popup a notification bubble via libnotify, could you check those are enabled in the Preferences dialog? - it may not be "global identity" but there is a request to be able to set the same avatar for all accounts in bug #547328 If your requests are well covered by the bug reports I pointed I suggest you subscribe to them, and this one may them simply closed as a duplicate.
Ah... it seems that the notification via libnotofy is working now. But I have to admit that I'd never have figured out that checking the box next to the field that says "Show notice, when chat isn't focused" (I'm using German UI, there it says "Benachrichtigung anzeigen, wenn der Chat nicht fokusiert ist") would have that effect. Anyway, I've followed your recommendation and subcribed to the other two bugs, plus added my suggestions. So that I can close this one now. PS: Sorry for posting multiple issues in one bug report, I didn't think about that when filing it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 460647 ***
I agree with you about the Preferences dialog, I actually filed bug 570188 about this.
