Description jaapkroes 2009-05-19 09:28:20 UTC
I would like to ask for a feature request to be able to use labels in rhythmbox.

LABEL DESCRIPTION:
Implemented label handling, possible features
 - label-based playlist
 - sort by label instead of genre
Implementation requires:
 - read labels from ID-tag in specified format
 - update labels to ID-tags for music in collection from internet DB
Other possible
 - write new labels to ID-tags
 - update internet DB with local changes

MOTIVATION:
Tags would be a lot better than genres to build smart playlists.
I have spend a lot of time tagging my music with the correct genres, however genres don't define music. What I consider rock music someone else could call 'shoegaze indie noise pop' ... ( or whatever), it completely depends on how much you listen to a certain music style. Someone who has 10 jazz songs will not label their genres as Pop-Jazz, Hard-Bob and Funk, etc, but just plainly Jazz. Same holds for any other style.
Therefore not one single genre-name can 'define' an artist or song for everyone. I think tags do a much better job at this, plus they allow me to be lazy and just update tags from internet.

ACQUIRING TAGS:
Labels can e.g. be imported from internet databases such last.fm-tags.
For Amarok such a feature is likely to come, see
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=48128

An examples of the imported labels can be:
http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/1.0/track/Editors/Lights/toptags.xml

The tags can be implemented in the ID-tags as comments, structured as (example)
# W1 "tag1", W2 "tag2", W3 "tag3", .....
where W represent the weight factors (number of times a tag has been assigned).

Another source could be musicbrainz.org, their tags are generally better structured but have much less user input.

Thank you already for creating such a nice program as rhythmbox!

Cheers,
Jaap
