Description Uri David Akavia 2009-03-30 19:08:32 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Whenever I restart my computer, the ALSA master playback volume is muted. Not only that, but it is set to a very low value, so I need to increase the volume.

This is happening only after upgrading to the volume control that uses pulseaudio.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set ALSA volume to be non-zero
2. Restart
3. AlSA volume is muted

Actual results:

Expected results:
Volume stays the same setting I left it.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Which distro is this? Smells like a distro problem to me.
Comment 2 Uri David Akavia 2009-03-31 11:29:18 UTC
This is Debian Testing.
If there are any commands I should run in the terminal and/or debug, let me know.
Comment 3 Luca Cavalli 2009-04-01 14:11:46 UTC
I'm experiencing the same issue on Ubuntu 9.04 beta. Maybe a Debian derivatives problem?
Comment 4 Lennart Poettering 2009-04-19 01:10:14 UTC
This is certainly unrelated to to GNOME btw. This should be moved to Ubuntu's or Debian's bugzilla.
Comment 5 Edwin ten Brink 2009-05-01 11:42:38 UTC
This might be related to bug 578174.

It is also present in Fedora 10 (see bug 578174), so does not seem packaging related to me.
Comment 6 Marc-Andre Lureau 2009-05-02 23:05:54 UTC
bug 578174 is only on recording switches (playback switches work fine).

Uri, can you verify the ALSA mixer settings with "alsamixer -c0"? If they are wrong, it could be either Debian ALSA script/settings or PulseAudio.

Check it by non-starting the GNOME session (and not starting PulseAudio in system), for example, just switch to a console after boot.

I believe this bug is not a gst-mixer bug.

thanks

After upgrading my system a few times, everything seems to work.
So I'm closing the bug as INCOMPLETE, since I have no idea on how to recreate this. I hope this is the correct action.

If someone were to run across this bug, or if it resurfaces, I'm attaching my PulseAudio, Gstreamer and gnome-media versions for the working system.

Comment 8 Uri David Akavia 2009-06-20 04:37:23 UTC
Okay.
This bug came back, so I looked at the output of alsamixer without logging into GNOME (GDM comes up automatically).
The volume was muted and set to 3.

Let me know if I should reopen, or file a bug for a different component.

Another thing that happens, and please tell me if I should open a different bug:
I start running xine (run xine dvd:// in terminal), and all the volumes are set to zero.
Comment 9 Uri David Akavia 2009-07-20 21:53:54 UTC
Since the bug came back, and GDM comes up automatically, I switched to a console after booting.
alsamixer tells me the volume is muted and set to 3.

Is this a PulseAudio bug or not? How can I find out?
Comment 10 Bastien Nocera 2009-07-20 21:57:26 UTC
It's a bug in your distribution. File a bug with them, nothing to do with gnome-media.
