The status icons are looking very out of place on the GNOME desktop, they stand out and do not match any themes very good actually. In contrast Pidgin has some very pretty status icons, made by Hylke, i believe. As long as the licenses don't crash, cant we use them?

I drew the empathy icons, and looking back on them, I'm not too happy with the execution on them. So +1 for using the Pidgin icons from me.

Actually there is already a bug report asking for better status icons for Hicolor theme (bug 547261), I'll mark this one as a duplicate.
