GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 570133
Doesn't work correctly with two batteries
Last modified: 2016-07-15 11:19:05 UTC
gnome-power-manager doesn't handle laptops with more than one battery very well. It just shows warnings and information as if the currently discharging one is the only one installed. Thus when the first battery runs out it shows warnings about power being critically low, and then goes on to say that the battery is fully charged when it starts using the other one and so on.
(In reply to comment #0) > ...and then goes on to say that the battery is fully charged when it starts > using the other one and so on. This is a kernel bug : http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-acpi/msg19946.html I'm just waiting for the patch to be committed.
(In reply to comment #0) > Thus when the first battery runs out it shows warnings about power being critically low Does your battery discharge one at a time or both at the same time? Could you please get the output from: devkit-power --monitor-detail when you've gone from both fully charged to both depleted. I want to make sure I get this right for g-p-m this time, the old engine had so many bodge-factors it was impossible to maintain. Thanks dude. Richard.
Created attachment 127982 [details] log file Here's a log file covering discharging from both batteries full to the last one almost empty.
Right, thanks for that -- that's all the data I need. We really need my kernel patch to be applied to prevent the crazy fully-charged reading when the embedded controller is unknown. I'll link this bug to the kernel bug. I'll work on patches this afternoon.
Kernel bug here: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12632
It appears this patch is in 2.6.29 release (merged in RC5) and on Fedora 11 (Rawhide) this still doesn't work right. Downstream bug here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220962 On a Lenovo T400., when reaching critical on Battery 1, g-p-m executes the indicated critical state. Battery 2 is 100% full.
I've just purchased an IBM Thinkpad Ultrabay Slim Battery so I can debug this locally here. Sorry for the delay.
*** Bug 583362 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Same problem here with a Thinpad X301, computer hibernates after the bay battery is empty (unless I turn this off). Also the remaining run time is solely taking the first battery in account.
I just experienced a new case of the machine suspending when the first battery was empty today. This is with the packages from fedora rawhide.
(In reply to comment #10) > I just experienced a new case of the machine suspending when the first battery > was empty today. This is with the packages from fedora rawhide. That totally shouldn't have happened. Could you get the --verbose log from gnome-power-manager when this happens please?
I have no way of testing this any more. Maybe we should close the report?
The problem is still valid here with gpm 2.91.5
The problem is still present in Ubuntu/quantal. Experienced on Dell Latitude E6430 with second battery in DVD slot. I turned off actions for "when battery is critically low" in the power settings. The first time is drawed from both batteries, the second time it emptied one, shut down, the other battery is fully charged. How can I produce the output from the gnome-power-manager ? Here some output from upower [aristoteles ~] $ upower --monitor-detail Monitoring activity from the power daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
