GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 567509
Show volume controls for multiple output devices
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:33:42 UTC
I am testing g-v-c from svn. I have two audio devices in my system: - the notebook sound card - an usb device to connect the guitar (it is really a usb sound card more or less with one input and one output) I would expect two notification icons to be in the notification area, one to control the output volume of each device. Both device are detected since they are shown in the preference dialog. What is even more weird is that when the preference dialog is open 3 icons appear in the notification area (2 outputs and a mic), but then they disappear once the prefs dialog is closed
I already mentioned the second part of the problem was a known bug. It's bug 565146.
The problem is that _most of the time_ we don't want to show 2 icons. This could be fixed once we have profile switching support, as users could just switch off devices they don't want to use or see appear in the notification area. Setting the blocker.
Mass move to gnome-control-center.
Mass reassign, sorry for the noise.
I doubt that we'll want that. Reassigning as gnome-shell has the interface for the sound status icon.
Audio output switching should be handled by gnome-shell and current output reflected in the icon in system status. Any sound card setup except "headphone-jack turns off speakers" needs a proper ui in my opinion without opening up gnome-control-center just to switch outputs.
2013?
I'm pretty sure that we don't want to show one icon per device, but we could possibly show one volume slider per device in the menu. I would need to understand the use cases more though.

Depending on how the rework of the Sound settings goes (probably not this cycle though...), we might want to have one slider per type of output (media, alerts, alarm) as per: https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings/Sound#Guidelines
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
