GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 563829
"Open" and "Browse Folder" redundant
Last modified: 2010-07-26 13:10:59 UTC
Right-clicking on a folder gives a menu with "Open" and "Browse Folder" as the first two items; both open nautilus on the folder. Please remove one of the redundant items. by Josh Triplett Other information: The redundancy only happens when the preferred mode is "Always open in browser windows".
This only applies to folders on the desktop.
"Browse Folder" is certainly redundant if /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_browser is True, at least. If it's False, there's perhaps a case for showing both (Open folder -> spatial mode, Browse Folder -> browser mode.)
At present , if the user selects the browser option , as of now , there is no way for the user to open folders in spatial view! This is depriving a feature from the user. I suggest modifying the present method to: Change the check box in the Behavior tab to radio buttons So in Behavior tab > Always open windows [*] In Same Browser [ ] In Spatial View Now , When user has selected an option for instance: 1> "In Same Browser" , - first option "Open" opens windows in Browser - second option is now "Spatial View" , 2> "In Spatial View", - first option "Open" opens windows in Spatial mode - second option is now "Browse Folder" This way the user has both the features and is able to differentiate between them. Side-Note: There might be concern about exposing the users to a new term "Spatial Mode" Alternate names for "Spatial Mode" / "Spatial View" could be "Mini browser" / "Mini Viewer" "Compact Browser" / "Compact Viewer" ---------- I would further like to see the option in other places other than desktop too. Though I use the browser , I find the spatial mode is quite useful sometimes. Adding a checkbox below the above option: [/] Show an option for the alternate viewing mode in the context menu. Would allow the users to open folders in spatial mode/browser even from other locations. Would this be a separate feature request? or can this be done along with this bug?
I don't think we should expose spatial mode to those who don't use it. It'd be too confusing. When browser mode is enabled, just show Open in the Desktop context menu. When spatial mode is active, show an Open and a Browse Folder option. This would be consistent with what we do elsewhere. Consistency is good.
