GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 558941
Possibility to randomize tracks order in a playlist
Last modified: 2020-03-17 08:29:06 UTC
At the moment it is only available to sort playlists by comlumns, but there is no way to randomize the order of tracks. I checked the list of new features coming up in the version 1.4 and it adds most features I use currently in Amarok, but mentioned feature seems to stay missing. I have searched the web before posting this feature request and I saw other people mentioning the absence of it too. It is implemented in most common media players (like Amarok, Rhythmbox, Exaile etc). Another feature that would be great is possibility to sort different playlists differently.
Doing this would probably also fix bug #539607, which is specific to the play queue. As for your second suggestion, could you please file a separate bug, if one doesn't already exist ? Having only one issue per bug helps us keeping track of things.

Here is the bug report for the second "suggestion" with new details: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558960
I almost switched to Banshee. Then I noticed I couldn't randomize the playlist. Unfortunately, this is an important feature for me; it's the way I listen to my music. Too bad. :(
Could you elaborate how would you use this feature? I'm probably missing something, but it seems you can achieve the same effect by using the "shuffle by song" mode when listening to your playlist.
Audacious and foobar2000 have this feature too. Which is part of why I use them. I prefer to stick whatever music I want to listen to in a playlist, randomize it, and play through.
Oh, and I do this because I can see what song will be played next, as well as the songs that were played previously. Shuffle play mode doesn't show this, as far as I know.
Oh, and I do this because I can see what song will be played next, as well as the songs that were played previously, and guarantees that no song will be repeated until the playlist is used up and I randomize it again.
In that case it sounds very similar to bug 571970.

It's like manual randomization. That was the main way how I chose the songs to listen. You cannot use it when you have your playlist sorted by artist name, song title, bitrate etc. At the moment I have to choose the songs myself (I must know what I want to play) or trust the shuffle mode. Of course I am now getting used to it, but this feature would be great and I would use it often for sure. (In reply to comment #8) > In that case it sounds very similar to bug 571970. > That bug tells about automatic population of songs from playlists, but would not give the manual randomization power I described before. Thank you for taking time to deal with this bug report!

i appreciate that this bug report is quite old, but as banshee is now standard in 11.04 i'd like to further the call for this feature. due to its absence i have installed rhythmbox
Banshee is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than three years ago. Its codebase has been archived. Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the responsibility for active development again.
