Totem has an option to set the connexion speed through the preferences menu.
For intance YouTube plugin makes use of that setting to select the quality of the video (see Bug 521536).

Do we really have to ask the user to set its connexion speed in Preferences
menu ? It's not very smart from a user point of view, and hardly discoverable
for a non-geek. 
Could we imagine a way for the system to discover connexion
speed and to automatically set it in Totem ?
Does network manager provide that piece of information ?

With Ubuntu, Synaptic deals with package installation.
I've just noticed that Synaptic displays the current connexion speed while installing package.
I had 230 kB∕s, then i closed my BitTorrent client and i got 580−680 kB∕s
i don't know if it can help

It'll be removed when we get buffering through queue2 in playbin2.

A quality option should then probably be added to the YouTube plugin itself.

It displays the connection speed while downloading a package, most likely. How this would help is beyond me.
