GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 553680
Internal GStreamer error: state change failed
Last modified: 2018-05-24 13:39:07 UTC
Please describe the problem: Rhythmbox won't play CDs. Steps to reproduce: 1. Insert CD into drive and open Rhythmbox 2. When the tracks appear in the window, click on one and click the play button 3. A stop sign appears next to the track - clickin on this produces a popup error message: Internal GStreamer error: state change failed. Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer. Actual results: The track doesn't play (it's not just that there is no sound, the timer bar doesn't move either and nothing happens except you get an error message) Expected results: The track should play Does this happen every time? Yes Other information:
I just went to System | Preferences | Sound and clicked on one of the test buttons to see if that did anything and I got the following error message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect: Connection refused Then I went to the "sounds" tab on the same menu and clicked on "play" next to the login sound and it froze the window. I killed it and then tried to go back into the menu and got the following message before the menu screen was brought up again: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. I have no idea what this means! It's all a bit strange because CDs played fine on Monday, but for some reason now I just get error messages and no sound at all. I think my laptop just doesn't like linux :(

If the device selection is currently set to 'default' or 'pulseaudio sound server', trying 'alsa' might work a bit better. Rhythmbox uses the 'music and movies' device setting here. Running 'pulseaudio --check -v' and 'pactl list' in a terminal might also tell you something.

Workaround/fix: I previously de-installed PulseAudio as it was making such a mess of sound on my system. mplayer is making sound just fine. There are no options in Rhythmbox to choose sound settings, you have to use the global gnome settings. System->Perferences->Hardware->Sound I set everything to ALSA. Now Rhythmbox actually works. (Although it still defaults to showing me "untitled.wav" instead of playing the CD.)
