Description Michael Doube 2008-09-20 12:57:37 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Cheese shows a test pattern only when used on a Sony Vaio SZ650, which uses the r5u870 driver for webcam support. The driver appears to be OK; the webcam works with Skype and when running:
]$ gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ximagesink

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu Hardy on a Vaio
2. Install r5u870 driver
3. Open cheese

Actual results:
Cheese opens, but displays a test pattern and the webcam's LED indicator does not come on

Expected results:
The LED indicator would come on and cheese would show images captured form the webcam

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

It is a known bug of the r5u870 driver. It doesn't correctly works with hal so cheese cannot detect your device. It's been already reported to their developer, take a look at http://bugs.mediati.org/r5u870/issue17
