sending control-characters

There's no mechanism for sending control-characters, such as control-d, control-n, or control-o, that are taken by the GUI interface. This makes access to shell line editing, or use of emacs through the remote desktop really frustrating. Perhaps (1) a check-box in the toolbar could be added to eliminate keyboard shortcuts from the GUI, or (2) these keyboard shortcuts should be mapped to shift-control-characters, as is done in Terminal_2.22.1 Other information:

This bug is still present in version 2.24.1 as distributed in Ubuntu 8.10 (the latest version).
