In the Sarge [note: that’s 2.8 !] version of eog there was a "gallery" view option that was immensely useful when browsing a gigantic directory of icons.  Please bring back this wonderful functionality. :-)
It arranged a grid of thumbnails that grew with window size instead of the single row of thumbnails now present in the "image collection" view.

That's a decision design and the "gallery view" won't come back again. However, if you want you can set the gconf key /apps/eog/ui/image_collection_resizable to true to use a multirow approach. See bug #338603 and bug #338608 for reference.
