There could be e.g. a gconf setting for this.

Other information:
Square brackets just look ugly for some desktops.
Moreover, they reduce the amount of useful information if the window list is narrow (or there are many windows).

Thanks for your suggestion-- I think this falls under bug #91655, marking as a dup.
