Description Oxmosys 2008-07-09 16:01:50 UTC
Current gnucash saves the data files with a lot of .xac and .log files. The fact that there's so much files and that the data files is lost within the .xac and .log files is a usability problem.

There's a lot of potential solutions that we can use against this problem but we need to find one which will keep all advantage of the current saving systems, and improve a bit this problem so gnucash users can have a better and easier control over their gnucash data files.

I open this bug corresponding to bug 537605 which was closed because the suggested solution in the bug description was not acceptable.

In order to have an open discussion on this problem and to avoid the bug closed, no solution is suggested in the description, I kept only the usability problem.

As a suggestion, another way to make this easier would be to add an option in gnucash preferences (like the current retain log files in preferences / general) to keep only one backup .xac and .log file at the same time. Would this be a realistic idea?

Derek : Wow, you're really fast. The bug was duplicate even before I could post my first comment ^^

More seriously, I opened this bug in respect of your decision about bug 537605 and to save the main problem exposed in this bug report without the suggested solution.

I hope you don't mind that I set this bug as not a duplicate because I don't think that you want to ignore this problem, I only think that a proper solution which consider all aspects has not been found to fix this problem without causing more important problems yet.

That's why I suggest to have this bug open until a realistic solution is found.

Thanks for your patience and for your work on gnucash, I really appreciate it.

There's already an option for how many days of backups to maintain. I think that's a much better option than a count of backup files.
