GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 535123
Drawer opening is too slow
Last modified: 2011-03-29 04:52:13 UTC
The opening of the drawer is too slow to use comfortably. User has to wait a long time before seeing the contents of the drawer. See the attached video. Please improve opening speed or provide a checkbox in drawer settings to disable opening animation. Other information: The speed is slighly better when using Metacity instead of Compiz, but still it is too slow to use regularly. One would almost screem when used often, the waiting is really annoying. Effects are nice, but only up to reasonable extent :)

Agreed. Most of these things are painfully slow and should be either eliminated or have a "no eyecandy" preference. I'm trying to fix my disk not watch a multimedia extravaganza.
This bug has been around for a while... very annoying to drawer users!

Any update about this bug? Ubuntu also has something similar: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-panel/+bug/108951
This user has the same problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTpvLsbh9p0 drawer is really nice feature of gnome panels, and i truly cant understand why this bug is not fixed.. it makes drawers unusable, because noone wants laggy component(s) on his desktop. please fix it, or at least disable animation and make it open instantly. tnx & gl
FWIW, it looks like Gnome 2.29.91 (tested in Ubuntu Lucid) fixes this issue. It has a very small delay but it isn't anywhere near as bad - looks like it just takes a second to slide out (probably making it actually look like an opening drawer - very smooth).
For GNOME 3, we removed the drawers from gnome-panel -- we believe they don't fit that well in GNOME 3, and there were always many issues (including usability issues) with them. We feel it's better this way.
