GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 534534
Add a --new-instance command line option
Last modified: 2009-01-03 15:34:52 UTC
If no other gedit instance is running then gedit command returns when the user closes gedit. If, however, a gedit instance if running then the gedit command returns immedately. This is fatal if the editor is called by another program or script which assumes that the user is done when the gedit command returns. I suggest to add a --new-instance command line option to gedit. The version control system git requires such behavior from an editor.
This is an important feature many are expecting from an editor. More details on how it is solved un other editors and the problem with Subversion: http://www.nabble.com/"svn-commit"-and-EDITOR%3Dgedit-td19797938.html
