Description Bill Case 2008-05-18 13:29:08 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I have/had a launcher that was setup on my Gnome panel that used the
command evolution --component=compose. That command used to open the
Evolution compose window on any workspace as long as Evolution was open
in one of the workspaces. It no longer works, opening an incomplete
evolution mailer window instead.

(evolution --component=compose is how I remember the command; help seems
to be silent.)

I consider it a loss of a handy facility. I had developed the habit of
keeping Evolution open in one workspace, full screen, but got used to
writing, copying and pasting from other application windows such as OOo,
gTerminal etc. in other workspaces to the composer. It made it easier to see what and why I was sending an email.

I can still drag the Composer from my evo workspace to other spaces. Which implies that the composer is still a somewhat independent module, so I should
be able to open the Composer in those other spaces.

The loss of the composer is not a deal breaker, but it was handy just to
click on a panel icon and pop open the email composer window right where I was working when I wanted to copy or write something to an email.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Try to set up a desktop or panel launcher
2. Try various versions of the evolution --component=compose command
3.

Actual results:
The framework window (not the data) for a full mailer window opens.

Expected results:
The compose window should pop open on any desktop.

Does this happen every time?
Yes

Other information:
I found this a useful (superior) substitute for the integration with Outlook that is offered by M$ OFFICE.

I forgot to mention, I have Fedora 8 and am getting ready to install Fedora 9.

Try "evolution mailto:" on a command-line.

I think that might get you the same result.

Thank you Mathhew;

"evolution mailto:" works both on a terminal command line and in a launcher command line.

Found it as well in 'help => Getting started => command lines' once I knew what to search for. I feel sheepish, but in my defense some remark that "evolution mailto:" is now the same as "-c compose" or that it opens the Composer window might have been helpful.
